Small 1-oz platinum bars are a convenient way to invest in platinum. Additionally, platinum bars carry lower premiums than government-issued platinum coins, such as the Royal Canadian Mint’s Platinum Maple Leafs and the Perth Mint’s Platypus coins.
Platinum bars currently being produced are .9995 fine, as are the 1-oz platinum coins. As a rule, platinum coins, which are minted by government mints, carry legal tender values and sell at higher premiums than 1-oz platinum bars. 1-oz Platinum Maple Leafs and 1-oz Perth Mint Platypus coins are the most readily available platinum coins.
Five recognized 1-oz platinum bars are readily available from prestigious precious metals refineries, namely Johnson Matthey, Credit Suisse, PAMP Suisse, Baird & Co. and Valcambi Suisse. You can buy these hallmarked bars with confidence.
Johnson Matthey platinum bars
The Johnson Matthey bars are packaged in Vinyl, ten bars to a group. JM bars are serial numbered and are the most readily available platinum bars.
Johnson Matthey, with facilities in the US and Canada, boats of being the largest global full service refiner of precious metals, with almost 200 years of experience. Johnson Matthey 100-oz silver bars for years were the most popular silver bars sold in the US. Now the most popular 100-oz silver bars are those sold by the Royal Canadian Mint.
Credit Suisse platinum bars
Credit Suisse platinum bars are usually available; they come packaged ten bars to a sheet as do the Johnson Matthey bars.
Actually, Credit Suisse is not a refinery but a global bank; however, CS is a recognized source of precious metals investor products, including gold bars. Credit Suisse products are produced by PAMP.
PAMP platinum bars
PAMP platinum bars are packaged with the bars suspended in a plastic card and held in place by a tough Vinyl wrap.
PAMP is a Switzerland-based precious metals, which is acknowledged to operate one of the world’s state-of-the-art refineries and fabrication facilities.
Baird & Co. platinum bars
Baird & Co. is a UK precious metals firm that has refining and minting capabilities, and their platinum bars are acceptable investments in the US. The bars’ cases say Baird & Co. on one side, “Baird Mint” on the other.
Valcambi Suisse platinum bars
Valcambi Suisse platinum bars are individually packaged the same as PAMP bars, with the bars suspended in a plastic card and held in place by a Vinyl wrap.
Valcambi is another Switzerland-based refinery and produces other precious metals products, including palladium bars.
5-oz platinum bars
The only platinum bars larger than 1-oz and marketed in the US are manufactured by Baird &K Co., which is based in the UK. No ten-ounce platinum bars are currently being marketed in the US.
Occasionally, older platinum bars that are .999 fine or lower purity will show up in the secondary market. Generally, such bars sell at discounts to the new .9995 bars, but often they are not re-sold but are sent to refineries where they are refined to .9995 purity.
