American Silver Eagles
Officially, American Silver Eagles are $1 coins and are often called American Eagle silver dollars. However, they are commonly referred to in the coin business as Silver Eagles.
Since Silver Eagle bullion coins were introduced in 1986, more than 400,000,000 have been minted, making Silver Eagles the most popular government-issued 1-oz silver coins.
Each Silver Eagle coin contains one ounce .999 fine silver bullion and carries a symbolic $1 face value. As noted above, the $1 face value makes Silver Eagles “silver dollars.” In the coin industry, however, “silver dollars” refer to old silver dollars minted 1878-1904 and 1921-1935.
Because the law that permits the U.S. Mint to produce Silver Eagles classifies them as “numismatic,” the Mint is allowed to sell Silver Eagles at prices above the one-dollar face value.
American Silver Eagle Coins packaging
The US Mint ships Silver Eagles in boxes of 500. Each box contains 25 tubes with twenty Silver Eagles to a tube. A sealed box weighs 40 pounds and measures 15″X9″X5″.
Silver Eagles Prices
The minimum order for Silver Eagles is 100 coins. A US Mint sealed box is sometimes called a Silver Eagle Monster Box. CMI Gold & Silver Inc. sells Silver Eagles at the lowest premiums for immediate delivery. Multiple-box orders carry still smaller markups over spot.
Alternatives to American Silver Eagles are the Royal Canadian Mint’s Canadian Silver Maple Leaf coins and Perth Mint Australian Kangaroos, both of which are .9999 fine (99.99% pure). Silver Maple Leafs also come 500 to a box and sell at slightly lower markups than Silver Eagles. Kangaroos are packaged 250 coins to a box.
Although Silver Maple Leafs and Kangaroos are .9999 fine silver, versus Silver Eagles at .999 fine, Silver Eagles sell at slightly higher premiums and are the best-selling 1-oz government-issued $1 silver coins.
Although the minimum silver bullion order at CMIGS is one hundred ounces, the minimum order for pre-1965 90% “junk” silver coins is a $000 face value bag, which contains 71.5 ounces of silver. Our Silver Specials Page often offers silver bullion products in amounts less than 100 ounces.
Backdated American Silver Eagles are nearly always available at lower markups than current year Silver Eagle coins. If you call about buying Silver Eagles, ask about backdated coins for lower prices.
