Officially, American Silver Eagles are one-dollar coins. Because they are one-dollar coins, they are often called American Eagle silver dollars. However, they are commonly known as Silver Eagles.
Since Silver Eagle bullion coins were introduced in 1986, more than 400,000,000 have been minted, making Silver Eagles the most successful U.S. Mint silver bullion coins ever.
Each Silver Eagle coin contains one ounce .999 fine silver bullion and carries a symbolic $1 face value. As noted above, the one-dollar face value makes Silver Eagles “silver dollars.” In the coin industry, however, “silver dollars” refer to old silver dollars minted 1878-1904 and 1921-1935.
Further, the Silver Eagles’ one-dollar face value officially makes American Silver Eagles legal tender. Because the law that permits the U.S. Mint to turn out Silver Eagles classifies them “numismatic,” the Mint is allowed to sell Silver Eagles at prices above the one-dollar face value.
American Silver Eagle packaging
Silver Eagles are shipped from the US Mint in boxes of 500. Each box contains 25 tubes with twenty Silver Eagles to a tube. A sealed box weighs 42 pounds and measures 15″X9″X5″.
Silver Eagles Prices
The minimum order for Silver Eagles is 200 coins. A US Mint sealed box is sometimes called a Silver Eagle Monster Box. CMI Gold & Silver Inc. sells Silver Eagles at the lowest premiums for immediate delivery. Multiple-box orders carry still smaller markups over spot.
Alternatives to American Silver Eagles are the Royal Canadian Mint’s Canadian Silver Maple Leaf coins , which are .9999 fine (99.99% pure). Silver Maple Leafs also come 500 to a box and sell at significantly lower markups than Silver Eagles.
Although the minimum silver bullion order at CMIGS is two hundred ounces, the minimum order for pre-1965 90% “junk” silver coins is a $250 face value bag, which contains 178.75 ounces of silver. Additionally, our Silver Specials Page often offers silver bullion products in amounts less than 200 ounces.
At times, backdated American Silver Eagles are available at lower markups than current year Silver Eagle coins. If you call about buying Silver Eagles, ask about backdated coins for lower prices.
