More Info on American Platinum Eagles
First minted in 1997, Platinum Eagles were an immediate success. However, platinum was trading only a few dollars above the price of gold, and many gold bullion buyers bought Platinum Eagles instead of gold bullion coins. Nowadays, it is a different story, with platinum trading often as much as $400 below the price of gold.
Platinum Eagle sizes, specs
Originally, the Mint produced Platinum Eagles in four sizes: 1-ounce, 1/2-ounce, 1/4-ounce, and 1/10-ounce. However, since the year 2014, the Mint has produced only 1-oz coins.
The face values are symbolic but make Platinum Eagles legal tender coins. Just like Gold Eagle coins, Platinum Eagles sell at prices that reflect the value of their metallic content, not their legal tender values.
Platinum Eagle Premiums
American Platinum Eagles are bullion coins, and their premiums compare with premiums on American Gold Eagles.
