Canadian silver coins

Maple Leaf silver coins

The Royal Canadian Mint's 1-oz Silver Maple Leaf coins are among the world's premier government-issued pure silver coins. Silver Maple Leafs are .9999 fine (99.99% pure), and each coin contain exactly one ounce of silver. Several other governments mint 1-oz pure silver coins, but those silver coins are .999 fine. The U.S. Mint's American Silver Eagles are .999 fine. The Royal Canadian Mint produces the prestigious Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coins.

Actually, the investment community puts no significance on the difference between .999 silver and .9999 silver, and makes Silver Eagles the best selling government-issued 1-oz pure silver coins in the world. Still, some investors believe that in the future there may be a significant difference and opt for the Canadian mapleleaf silver coins because of their higher purity.

Mapleleaf silver coins packaging

Canadian Mapleleaf silver coins are conveniently packaged twenty-five coins to a tube, twenty tubes to a mint box. A Silver Maple Leaf mint box measures 8" X 9-3/4" X 4-1/2", which make it ideal for shipping via the Post Office's Flat Rate boxes.

Shipping with Flat Rate boxes is economical and easy. This is not the case with American Silver Eagles, and shipping Silver Eagles can be costly. Basically, it boils down to the shape and dimensions of the Silver Eagles' boxes, which do not fit in Flat Rate boxes. When investors resell Silver Eagles, shipping costs can become an issue.

Silver Maple Leaf prices

The minimum order for Silver Maple Leafs is a Mint-sealed box of 500 coins. A Mint-sealed box of 2009-dated Silver Maple Leafs sells at a premium of $3.00 each coin. Larger orders enjoy still smaller markups over spot.

American Silver Eagles are the Silver Maple Leafs' biggest competitor. As a rule, Silver Eagles sell at higher premiums than the Canadian Mapleleaf silver coins but not always.

Although the minimum silver bullion order at CMIGS is five hundred ounces, the minimum order for pre-1965 90% "junk" silver coins is a $500 face value bag, which contains 357.5 ounces of silver.

Investors looking for low-premium silver should consider the RCM 850-oz silver bars, which are the cheapest silver bars available for retail delivery. Investors looking for convenience in silver investing often go with 100-oz silver bars.
